Tips for Surviving Summer in Japan

Summer in Japan can be both an enchanting and challenging experience for visitors. With high temperatures and intense humidity, it's essential to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you stay cool and enjoy your summer adventures in Japan.

1. Choose the Right Clothing

Opt for breathable, lightweight fabrics to keep cool in the humid climate. Uniqlo's AIRism line is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. These clothes are designed to wick away moisture and provide a cooling effect, making them perfect for Japan's summer heat.

Consider packing:

  • AIRism T-shirts and tank tops

  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking pants or skirts

  • Breathable underwear

2. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial during the hot and humid summer months. While water is essential, sports drinks like Pocari Sweat and Aquarius can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating. These drinks are widely available in convenience stores and vending machines, ensuring you stay hydrated and energized throughout the day.

Pocari Sweat and Aquarius

These are Japanese version of Gatorade. They both have a similar grapefruit-like flavor and contain electrolytes, making them ideal for rehydration after sweating. These are also said to help with jet lag.

3. Take Breaks with Cold Desserts

Japanese summers are synonymous with delicious, refreshing desserts. Taking a break to enjoy these treats can help you cool down and recharge.

Some popular options include:

Kakigori (shaved ice)

Shaved ice topped with flavored syrups, condensed milk, or even fresh fruit.
In summer, you will see “氷” signs in many places, meaning that they serve kakigori.

Mochi Ice Cream

A delightful combination of chewy mochi and creamy ice cream. Yukimi Daifuku is one of my favorite mochi ice creams and is often sold at convenience stores.

Fruit Popsicles

Fruit popsicles made with seasonal fruits is another popular summer dessert.

You'll find these treats at various stalls, cafes, and convenience stores across Japan.

4. Utilize Cooling Accessories

Japan offers a range of cooling accessories to help combat the summer heat.

Consider picking up:

  • Portable fans: Battery-operated or rechargeable fans are perfect for on-the-go cooling.

  • Cooling towels: These towels can be soaked in water, wrung out, and swung around to activate a cooling effect.

  • UV umbrellas: These umbrellas are designed to block harmful UV rays and provide shade, helping you stay cool and protected from the sun.

Cooling towels

Cooling towels and other heat protection products can be found at stores such as Loft, drugstores, and even Daiso.

5. Avoid Weak Air Conditioning Cars on Trains

When traveling by train, especially on hot days, be mindful of the car you choose. Many Japanese trains have designated "弱冷房車" (weak air conditioning cars) which provide milder cooling for those who prefer a less intense air conditioning environment. These cars may not be ideal if you’re looking to escape the heat. Look for the standard cars to ensure a cooler, more comfortable ride.

If you see this sign, move to the next car!

6. Explore Indoor Attractions

To avoid the peak of the heat, plan indoor activities during the day. Explore air-conditioned museums and shopping centers, or take a relaxing break at a café. Japan boasts numerous indoor attractions that are perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Consider visiting:

  • teamLab exhibitions: teamLab is a Tokyo-based digital art collective that hosts immersive digital art exhibitions worldwide. In Tokyo, there are two teamLab exhibitions: Borderless and Planets, both renowned for offering extraordinary experiences. Particularly, teamLab Planets has an exhibit where you walk through water, making it a cool and unique experience perfect for the summer.

  • Museums: Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, and Nara National Museum are great for a cool, educational experience.

  • Aquariums: Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan are just a few options. Seeing cute and fascinating sea creatures can be a soothing and enjoyable way to escape the summer heat.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your summer trip to Japan while staying cool and comfortable. Have a great time and enjoy the unique beauty and culture that Japan has to offer!
